Zoom out from an average adult to a container ship
A container ship is too big to show next to an average adult in one picture, so here it is in 3 steps. Each step is drawn to its own scale and zooms out from the step before.
-
Step 1 of 3 Human → Megalodon
A megalodon is about 8.6–15 times as long as an average adult is tall.
Step 1: Human and Megalodon at the same scale. -
Step 2 of 3 Megalodon → Great Pyramid of Giza
The Great Pyramid of Giza is about 5.6–9.1 times as tall as a megalodon is long.
Step 2: Megalodon and Great Pyramid of Giza at the same scale. -
Step 3 of 3 Great Pyramid of Giza → Container ship
A container ship is about 2.9 times as long as the Great Pyramid of Giza is tall.
Step 3: Great Pyramid of Giza and Container ship at the same scale.

About the container ship
The biggest container ships are about 400 m long and carry more than 24,000 standard 20-foot containers. Ever Alot, built by China's Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding for Evergreen Marine and delivered in June 2022, measures 399.99 m long and 61.5 m wide. It was the first ship able to carry more than 24,000 TEU, and Guinness World Records lists it among the record holders for container capacity.
- Ever Alot can carry 24,004 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units), 12 TEU more than its predecessor Ever Ace. [2]
- Ever Alot was the seventh ship in Evergreen's series of 13 A-class ships and the first in the world over 24,000 TEU; it is classed by ABS and was deployed on Far East to Europe routes. [1]
- Guinness World Records lists Ever Alot, Ever Atop and Ever Aria as the largest container ships by capacity, with a gross tonnage of 236,228. [3]
- According to Guinness, these ships stop just short of 400 m because ships over 400 m count as oversized and pay higher docking fees at many ports. [3]
How many fit?
- ≈ 240 × Human · height lined up end to end match the Container ship · length overall
- ≈ 2.1 × Gateway Arch · maximum height lined up end to end match the Container ship · length overall
Counts divide one sourced figure by another. "End to end" uses each object's main measurement; weight and volume rows appear only when both figures are sourced.
How it compares
- 240× A container ship is about 240 times as long as an average adult is tall. See side by side
- 2.1× A container ship is about 2.1 times as long as the Gateway Arch is tall. See side by side
- 1.5× A container ship is about 1.5 times as long as the Titanic. See side by side
- 1.8× A container ship is about 1.8 times as long as the Hoover Dam is tall. See side by side
- 1/1.4 One World Trade Center is about 1.4 times as tall as a container ship is long. See side by side
- 1/2.1 The Burj Khalifa is about 2.1 times as tall as a container ship is long. See side by side
Factors compare the length overall of a container ship with each object’s own main measurement (height for a human). Where a size varies, the factor is given as a range.
Notes on these figures
- No page from Evergreen or Hudong-Zhonghua itself could be read; the 399.99 m length, 61.5 m width and 33.2 m depth are the builder's figures as reported by MarineLink at delivery.
- Guinness World Records gives the length as 399.9 m (1,312 ft), slightly different from the 399.99 m reported at delivery.
- Gross tonnage (236,228) is a measure of enclosed volume, not weight, so it is not stored as a mass. No source gave the ship's actual mass (lightship weight or displacement).
- The record status quoted is as shown on the Guinness page in September 2026; newer ships may since have been reported with higher capacities.
