About the school bus
The familiar yellow school bus in the United States is usually a Type C, or conventional, bus: the engine sits under a hood in front of the windshield and the entrance door is behind the front wheels. In a study funded through the US DOT university transportation centers program, a 65/66-passenger Type C bus had a manufacturer-specified length of about 35.6 ft (10.9 m), and today's national standards cap school buses at 45 ft. Blue Bird lists its current Vision model as 96 inches wide and 121 to 128 inches tall.
How many fit?
- ≈ 6.5 × Human · height lined up end to end match the School bus · length (65/66-passenger type c)
- ≈ 180 × Human · body mass on the scales weigh as much as School bus · gross vehicle weight rating
- ≈ 9.5 × African lion · shoulder height lined up end to end match the School bus · length (65/66-passenger type c)
- ≈ 67–120 × African lion · body mass on the scales weigh as much as School bus · gross vehicle weight rating
Counts divide one sourced figure by another. "End to end" uses each object's main measurement; weight and volume rows appear only when both figures are sourced.
How it compares
- 6.5× A school bus is about 6.5 times as long as an average adult is tall. See side by side
- 9.5× A school bus is about 9.5 times as long as an African lion is tall at the shoulder. See side by side
- 2.2× A school bus is about 2.2 times as long as a mid-size car. See side by side
- 1/1.1 A school bus is about as long as a Tyrannosaurus rex. See side by side
- 1/1.1 A school bus is about as long as a Brachiosaurus is tall. See side by side
- 1/2.2 A tennis court is about 2.2 times as long as a school bus. See side by side
Factors compare the length (65/66-passenger type c) of a school bus with each object’s own main measurement (height for a human). Where a size varies, the factor is given as a range.
Notes on these figures
- School bus lengths vary with seating capacity. The 35.6 ft typical length is one manufacturer-specified 65/66-passenger bus from a 1998 study; the largest buses approach the 45 ft limit.
- Current manufacturer specification sheets (Blue Bird, IC Bus, Thomas Built) list wheelbases, height and width but not overall length.
