About the Holstein cow

The black-and-white Holstein is the best-known dairy breed. Oklahoma State University and Michigan State University Extension both describe a mature Holstein cow as weighing about 1,500 lb and standing about 58 in tall at the shoulder. Calves weigh roughly 80 to 100 lb at birth.

  • Holstein heifers can be bred at about 15 months old, when they weigh about 800 lb. [1]
  • Oklahoma State University says a healthy Holstein calf weighs 90 lb or more at birth. [1]
  • Holstein gestation lasts about nine months, and first calving is ideally between 24 and 27 months of age. [1]

How many fit?

  • ≈ 8.1 × Human · body mass on the scales weigh as much as Cow (Holstein) · weight (mature cow)
  • ≈ 2.5 × Dog (Labrador Retriever) · height at withers lined up end to end match the Cow (Holstein) · height at shoulder
  • ≈ 19–27 × Dog (Labrador Retriever) · weight on the scales weigh as much as Cow (Holstein) · weight (mature cow)

Counts divide one sourced figure by another. "End to end" uses each object's main measurement; weight and volume rows appear only when both figures are sourced.

How it compares

  • 2.5× A Holstein cow is about 2.5 times as tall at the shoulder as a Labrador Retriever. See side by side
  • 1/1.1 A Holstein cow is about as tall at the shoulder as an average adult is tall. See side by side
  • 1/1.2 A gorilla is about 1.2 times as tall as a Holstein cow is tall at the shoulder. See side by side
  • 1/1.4–1.9 An ostrich is about 1.4–1.9 times as tall as a Holstein cow is tall at the shoulder. See side by side
  • 1/1.1 A Holstein cow is about as tall at the shoulder as a horse. See side by side
  • 1/1.7–2.5 An African elephant is about 1.7–2.5 times as tall at the shoulder as a Holstein cow. See side by side

Factors compare the height at shoulder of a Holstein cow with each object’s own main measurement (height for a human). Where a size varies, the factor is given as a range.

Notes on these figures

  • Holstein Association USA pages (Holstein 101 and its fact sheet PDF) sat behind a bot check and could not be read.
  • Both sources give a single typical height and weight, not a range; bulls are not covered.
  • The two sources differ slightly on calf birth weight: 80 to 100 lb (MSU Extension) versus 90 lb or more (Oklahoma State).
