About the house cat
The domestic cat most likely descends from African wildcats or Asian desert cats. There are more than 100 breeds, but nearly all share a very similar body shape and size, differing mainly in coat type and colour. The Animal Diversity Web gives an average length of 76.2 cm and an adult weight of 4.1 to 5.4 kg.
- Cats have about 244 bones, around 30 of them vertebrae, which lets them twist half of the spine through 180 degrees. [1]
- A cat can jump about five times its own height. [1]
- Cats have no collarbone, which helps them slip through narrow gaps. [1]
- Adult cats have 26 teeth; the milk teeth appear at about two weeks old. [1]
How many fit?
- ≈ 2.2 × House cat · length (average adult) lined up end to end match the Human · height
- ≈ 14–22 × House cat · adult mass on the scales weigh as much as Human · body mass
- ≈ 9.1–13 × Soccer ball · weight on the scales weigh as much as House cat · adult mass
Counts divide one sourced figure by another. "End to end" uses each object's main measurement; weight and volume rows appear only when both figures are sourced.
How it compares
- 1.1× A house cat is about as long as a soccer ball is around. See side by side
- 2.6× A house cat is about 2.6 times as long as a sheet of A4 paper is tall. See side by side
- 1.3× A house cat is about 1.3 times as long as a Labrador Retriever is tall at the shoulder. See side by side
- 1/2.2 An average adult is about 2.2 times as tall as a house cat is long. See side by side
- 1/2.4 A gorilla is about 2.4 times as tall as a house cat is long. See side by side
- 1/2.8–3.6 An ostrich is about 2.8–3.6 times as tall as a house cat is long. See side by side
Factors compare the length (average adult) of a house cat with each object’s own main measurement (height for a human). Where a size varies, the factor is given as a range.
Notes on these figures
- The brief asked for head-body length, but no veterinary or university source giving a cat's head-body length could be fetched. The only fetched length is ADW's 'average length is 76.2 cm' (30.0 in), which does not say whether the tail is included. The silhouette should be drawn to that length nose to tail tip only after checking this.
- Wikipedia states a head-to-body length of about 46 cm and a tail of about 30 cm, citing Sunquist and Sunquist, Wild Cats of the World (University of Chicago Press, 2002). That book could not be read (Internet Archive lending only, Google Books blocked), so those figures are left out.
- Britannica's cat article returned 403 to every fetch method.
