About the Labrador Retriever
Dog size varies enormously by breed, so this entry uses the Labrador Retriever, a strongly built, medium-sized retriever and one of the best-known breeds. The American Kennel Club standard sets the height at the withers at 22.5 to 24.5 in for males and 21.5 to 23.5 in for females. In working condition males weigh about 65 to 80 lb and females about 55 to 70 lb.
- Under the AKC standard, a Labrador more than half an inch above or below the height range is disqualified from the show ring. The height rule does not apply to dogs under twelve months old. [1]
- The standard calls for a short-coupled body: the length from the point of the shoulder to the point of the rump equals, or is slightly more than, the height at the withers. [1]
- The distance from the elbow to the ground should be half the height at the withers. [1]
- The current AKC Labrador Retriever standard was approved on February 12, 1994 and took effect on March 31, 1994. [1]
How many fit?
- ≈ 2.6–3.2 × Dog (Labrador Retriever) · height at withers lined up end to end match the Human · height
- ≈ 2.1–3.6 × Dog (Labrador Retriever) · weight on the scales weigh as much as Human · body mass
- ≈ 2 × A4 sheet of paper · height (long side) lined up end to end match the Dog (Labrador Retriever) · height at withers
Counts divide one sourced figure by another. "End to end" uses each object's main measurement; weight and volume rows appear only when both figures are sourced.
How it compares
- 2× A Labrador Retriever is about 2 times as tall at the shoulder as a sheet of A4 paper is tall. See side by side
- 1/1.3 A house cat is about 1.3 times as long as a Labrador Retriever is tall at the shoulder. See side by side
- 1/2.6–3.2 An average adult is about 2.6–3.2 times as tall as a Labrador Retriever is tall at the shoulder. See side by side
- 1/3.1 A gorilla is about 3.1 times as tall as a Labrador Retriever is tall at the shoulder. See side by side
- 1/3.4–5 An ostrich is about 3.4–5 times as tall as a Labrador Retriever is tall at the shoulder. See side by side
- 1/2.6–3.2 A horse is about 2.6–3.2 times as tall at the shoulder as a Labrador Retriever. See side by side
Factors compare the height at withers of a Labrador Retriever with each object’s own main measurement (height for a human). Where a size varies, the factor is given as a range.
Notes on these figures
- The AKC standard gives heights as 22 1/2 to 24 1/2 in and 21 1/2 to 23 1/2 in; they are stored as decimals.
- Heights are the show standard, not a population survey; individual pet Labradors can fall outside them, and weights are stated as approximate.
