About the sheet of A4 paper
A4 is one of the A-series paper sizes defined in the international standard ISO 216 for stationery and printed matter. The series starts from A0, a sheet with an area of one square metre, and each smaller size is made by cutting the one above it in half parallel to its shorter side. A4 is trimmed to 210 by 297 millimetres.
- The basic A0 sheet has an area of 1 square metre and measures 841 by 1,189 mm. [1]
- A3 (297 x 420 mm) is twice the size of A4, and A5 (148 x 210 mm) is half of it. [1]
- Because each size is half the one above and all sizes share the same shape, two successive A sizes differ in area by a ratio of 2:1. [1]
How many fit?
- ≈ 5.7 × A4 sheet of paper · height (long side) lined up end to end match the Human · height
- ≈ 3.5 × Credit card · width lined up end to end match the A4 sheet of paper · height (long side)
Counts divide one sourced figure by another. "End to end" uses each object's main measurement; weight and volume rows appear only when both figures are sourced.
How it compares
- 3.5× A sheet of A4 paper is about 3.5 times as tall as a credit card is wide. See side by side
- 1.9× A sheet of A4 paper is about 1.9 times as tall as a US dollar bill is long. See side by side
- 1/2.6 A basketball is about 2.6 times as around as a sheet of A4 paper is tall. See side by side
- 1/2.6 A house cat is about 2.6 times as long as a sheet of A4 paper is tall. See side by side
- 1/2 A Labrador Retriever is about 2 times as tall at the shoulder as a sheet of A4 paper is tall. See side by side
- 1/5.7 An average adult is about 5.7 times as tall as a sheet of A4 paper. See side by side
Factors compare the height (long side) of a sheet of A4 paper with each object’s own main measurement (height for a human). Where a size varies, the factor is given as a range.
Notes on these figures
- A sheet's weight depends on the paper's grammage, so no single mass is given.
- ISO 216 allows small trimming tolerances, which are not listed here.
