About the soda can
The standard North American drink can holds 12 US fluid ounces (355 mL), with a separate, narrower lid. Can maker Ball Corporation's industry-standard drawing gives the aluminum body a 2.600 in (66.04 mm) outside diameter and a height of 4.812 in (122.22 mm). The top narrows to a smaller neck so that a smaller lid can be used.
How many fit?
- ≈ 14 × Soda can · height lined up end to end match the Human · height
- ≈ 2.4 × AA battery · overall height lined up end to end match the Soda can · height
- ≈ 44 × AA battery · volume packed inside, by volume fill Soda can · fill volume
Counts divide one sourced figure by another. "End to end" uses each object's main measurement; weight and volume rows appear only when both figures are sourced.
How it compares
- 2.4× A soda can is about 2.4 times as tall as an AA battery. See side by side
- 1.4× A soda can is about 1.4 times as tall as a credit card is wide. See side by side
- 1/1.2 A smartphone is about 1.2 times as tall as a soda can. See side by side
- 1/5.6 A soccer ball is about 5.6 times as around as a soda can is tall. See side by side
- 1/2.4 A sheet of A4 paper is about 2.4 times as tall as a soda can. See side by side
- 1/14 An average adult is about 14 times as tall as a soda can. See side by side
Factors compare the height of a soda can with each object’s own main measurement (height for a human). Where a size varies, the factor is given as a range.
Notes on these figures
- Ball's height is for the open, flanged can body before the lid is seamed on; no primary source was found for the height of a sealed can, which differs slightly.
- No can-maker source for the weight of an empty or full can was found, so mass is left out.
- The Ball drawing is hosted on a distributor's site (CanSource), not on ball.com.
