About the soccer ball
A soccer ball is an air-filled sphere, usually made of stitched or bonded synthetic panels. Law 2 of the Laws of the Game, set by The IFAB, requires a circumference of 68 to 70 cm and a weight of 410 to 450 g at the start of a match. The law also limits its inflation pressure.
- Law 2 requires a ball pressure of 0.6-1.1 atmosphere (600-1,100 g/cm2) at sea level. [1]
How many fit?
- ≈ 2.4 × Soccer ball · circumference lined up end to end match the Human · height
- ≈ 170–220 × Soccer ball · weight on the scales weigh as much as Human · body mass
- ≈ 14 × AA battery · overall height lined up end to end match the Soccer ball · circumference
- ≈ 19 × AA battery · weight on the scales weigh as much as Soccer ball · weight
Counts divide one sourced figure by another. "End to end" uses each object's main measurement; weight and volume rows appear only when both figures are sourced.
How it compares
- 14× A soccer ball is about 14 times as around as an AA battery is tall. See side by side
- 8.1× A soccer ball is about 8.1 times as around as a credit card is wide. See side by side
- 4.4× A soccer ball is about 4.4 times as around as a US dollar bill is long. See side by side
- 1/1.1 A soccer ball is about as around as a basketball. See side by side
- 1/1.1 A soccer ball is about as around as a house cat is long. See side by side
- 1/2.4 An average adult is about 2.4 times as tall as a soccer ball is around. See side by side
Factors compare the circumference of a soccer ball with each object’s own main measurement (height for a human). Where a size varies, the factor is given as a range.
Notes on these figures
- The Law gives circumference, not diameter; any diameter shown is calculated from it.
