Zoom out from an average adult to a soccer pitch
A soccer pitch is too big to show next to an average adult in one picture, so here it is in 2 steps. Each step is drawn to its own scale and zooms out from the step before.
-
Step 1 of 2 Human → Megalodon
A megalodon is about 8.6–15 times as long as an average adult is tall.
Step 1: Human and Megalodon at the same scale. -
Step 2 of 2 Megalodon → Soccer pitch
A soccer pitch is about 4.1–7.3 times as long as a megalodon.
Step 2: Megalodon and Soccer pitch at the same scale.

About the soccer pitch
Soccer pitches do not have one fixed size. The Laws of the Game allow touchlines from 90 to 120 m in general, but international matches must be played on a pitch 100 to 110 m long and 64 to 75 m wide. The goals are 7.32 m (8 yd) wide between the posts and 2.44 m (8 ft) high to the underside of the crossbar. The penalty mark is 11 m from the goal.
- The penalty area reaches 16.5 m (18 yd) out from the inside of each goalpost and 16.5 m into the field; the goal area is 5.5 m (6 yd) on the same pattern. [1]
- Goalposts and the crossbar may be no more than 12 cm (5 in) wide, and all pitch lines share one width of no more than 12 cm. [1]
- Competitions may choose their own touchline and goal line lengths as long as they stay within the Law 1 limits. [1]
How many fit?
- ≈ 62 × Human · height lined up end to end match the Soccer pitch · length (international matches)
- ≈ 2.1 × Olympic swimming pool · length lined up end to end match the Soccer pitch · length (international matches)
Counts divide one sourced figure by another. "End to end" uses each object's main measurement; weight and volume rows appear only when both figures are sourced.
How it compares
- 62× A soccer pitch is about 62 times as long as an average adult is tall. See side by side
- 2.1× A soccer pitch is about 2.1 times as long as an Olympic swimming pool. See side by side
- 1.4× A soccer pitch is about 1.4 times as long as a Boeing 747. See side by side
- 1/1 A soccer pitch is about as long as the International Space Station. See side by side
- 1/1.8 The Gateway Arch is about 1.8 times as tall as a soccer pitch is long. See side by side
- 1/2.6 The Titanic is about 2.6 times as long as a soccer pitch. See side by side
Factors compare the length (international matches) of a soccer pitch with each object’s own main measurement (height for a human). Where a size varies, the factor is given as a range.
Notes on these figures
- There is no single pitch size; the headline range is the one allowed for international matches.
- The IFAB gives metric and imperial figures side by side; they are rounded equivalents, not exact conversions (for example 100 m is listed with 110 yd).
