About the tennis court

A regulation tennis court is a rectangle 78 feet (23.77 m) long. It is 27 feet wide for singles and 36 feet wide for doubles, with the extra width forming the doubles alleys along each side. The net hangs 3.5 feet high at the posts and is strapped down to 3 feet at the centre. Service lines sit 21 feet from the net on each side.

  • All tennis court measurements are taken to the outside of the lines. [1]
  • For doubles, the centres of the net posts stand 3 feet outside the doubles court on each side. [1]
  • For international competitions the ITF recommends at least 21 feet of space behind each baseline and at least 12 feet beside each sideline. [1]

How many fit?

  • ≈ 14 × Human · height lined up end to end match the Tennis court · length
  • ≈ 1.9 × City bus · length over bumpers lined up end to end match the Tennis court · length

Counts divide one sourced figure by another. "End to end" uses each object's main measurement; weight and volume rows appear only when both figures are sourced.

How it compares

  • 14× A tennis court is about 14 times as long as an average adult is tall. See side by side
  • 1.9× A tennis court is about 1.9 times as long as a city bus. See side by side
  • 1.1× A tennis court is about as long as a semi truck. See side by side
  • 1/1.7 A Boeing 737 is about 1.7 times as long as a tennis court. See side by side
  • 1/2.5 The Leaning Tower of Pisa is about 2.5 times as tall as a tennis court is long. See side by side
  • 1/3.9 The Statue of Liberty is about 3.9 times as tall as a tennis court is long. See side by side

Factors compare the length of a tennis court with each object’s own main measurement (height for a human). Where a size varies, the factor is given as a range.

Notes on these figures

  • Width uses the doubles court. The run-off space around the court is not included in the length or width.
  • Smaller 'Red' and 'Orange' courts allowed for 10-and-under tennis are not covered here.
