About the whale shark
The whale shark is the largest fish alive, a slow-moving filter feeder of warm seas that strains plankton through a mouth up to about 4 ft wide. Georgia Aquarium gives a common adult length of 18 to 32.8 ft, and the largest one measured was 61.7 ft (18.8 m). Weights are hard to pin down: sources give figures from about 20 tons to as much as 40 tons.
- The whale shark is the largest fish in the world and the largest fish known to have lived. Its cartilage skeleton fossilizes poorly, and living animals are very hard to weigh accurately. [1]
- Its mouth can reach up to 4 ft wide, and adult skin can be 4 inches (10 cm) thick. [1]
- Whale sharks longer than about 39 ft are uncommon, and scientists think they may live roughly 60 to 100 years. [3]
How many fit?
- ≈ 3.1–6.2 × Human · height lined up end to end match the Whale shark · length (common)
- ≈ 220 × Human · body mass on the scales weigh as much as Whale shark · mass (large adult)
- ≈ 3.7–6.8 × Cow (Holstein) · height at shoulder lined up end to end match the Whale shark · length (common)
- ≈ 27 × Cow (Holstein) · weight (mature cow) on the scales weigh as much as Whale shark · mass (large adult)
Counts divide one sourced figure by another. "End to end" uses each object's main measurement; weight and volume rows appear only when both figures are sourced.
How it compares
- 3.1–6.2× A whale shark is about 3.1–6.2 times as long as an average adult is tall. See side by side
- 3.7–6.8× A whale shark is about 3.7–6.8 times as long as a Holstein cow is tall at the shoulder. See side by side
- 4.5–9.4× A whale shark is about 4.5–9.4 times as long as an African lion is tall at the shoulder. See side by side
- 1.1–2× A whale shark is about 1.1–2 times as long as a mid-size car. See side by side
- 1/1.1–2 A school bus is about 1.1–2 times as long as a whale shark. See side by side
- 1/1.2–2.2 A Brachiosaurus is about 1.2–2.2 times as tall as a whale shark is long. See side by side
Factors compare the length (common) of a whale shark with each object’s own main measurement (height for a human). Where a size varies, the factor is given as a range.
Notes on these figures
- Weights for whale sharks are poorly known: Georgia Aquarium gives up to 20.6 tons and NOAA up to 40 tons 'by some estimates'. Both say 'tons' without specifying which; they are stored as US short tons as both are US organizations.
- Georgia Aquarium's quick-facts box rounds the common length to '18-32 feet'; the 32.8 ft upper value from its detailed text is used.
- NOAA Fisheries has no species page for the whale shark (the URL returned 404), so NOAA's National Ocean Service fact page was used instead.
