Tokyo Skytree is too big to show next to an average adult in one picture, so here it is in 3 steps. Each step is drawn to its own scale and zooms out from the step before.

  1. Step 1 of 3 Human → Megalodon

A megalodon is about 8.6–15 times as long as an average adult is tall.

About Tokyo Skytree

Tokyo Skytree is a steel broadcasting and observation tower in the Oshiage district of Sumida, Tokyo, completed in 2012 and responsible for transmitting terrestrial digital broadcasts. Its height was first planned at about 610 m and later fixed at 634 m, a number that can be read as 'Musashi', the old province that included the site. Guinness World Records certified it as the world's tallest tower on 17 November 2011. It stands on a triangular footprint with sides of about 68 m, and its observation decks are at floors 350 and 450.

  • Guinness World Records certified the 634 m tower as the world's tallest tower on 17 November 2011. [1]
  • The steel pipes at the base of the tower are 2.3 m across with walls 10 cm thick; the first above-ground section, raised in April 2009, was about 4 m tall and weighed about 29 tons. [3]
  • Its earthquake damping uses a 'mass addition mechanism' that can cut the response shear force by about 40% in a major earthquake, an approach compared with the central pillar of traditional five-storey pagodas. [3]
  • When its site was chosen in 2006, Japan's tallest structure was the 1958 Tokyo Tower at about 333 m, roughly half Skytree's height. [3]

How many fit?

  • ≈ 380 × Human · height lined up end to end match the Tokyo Skytree · maximum height
  • ≈ 430,000 × Human · body mass on the scales weigh as much as Tokyo Skytree · weight of the steel tower
  • ≈ 3.3 × Gateway Arch · maximum height lined up end to end match the Tokyo Skytree · maximum height

Counts divide one sourced figure by another. "End to end" uses each object's main measurement; weight and volume rows appear only when both figures are sourced.

  • 1/1.3 The Burj Khalifa is about 1.3 times as tall as Tokyo Skytree. See side by side

Factors compare the maximum height of Tokyo Skytree with each object’s own main measurement (height for a human). Where a size varies, the factor is given as a range.

Notes on these figures

  • The weight is the official figure for the tower's steel framework including the observation decks.
  • The official structure page also calls the height 'approximately 634 meters'; the specifications page gives 634 m as the maximum height.
