About the grain of rice

Rice kernels are sorted into length classes, and long-grain varieties have long, slender kernels. The International Rice Research Institute's Standard Evaluation System classes a hulled brown-rice kernel as long when it measures 6.6 to 7.5 millimetres. Kernels over 7.5 mm count as extra long, while medium grains run 5.51 to 6.6 mm.

  • IRRI's length classes for brown rice are extra long (more than 7.5 mm), long (6.6 to 7.5 mm), medium (5.51 to 6.6 mm) and short (5.5 mm or less). [1]
  • Kernels are called slender when their length is more than 3 times their width. [1]

How many fit?

  • ≈ 220–270 × Grain of rice · kernel length (long-grain class) lined up end to end match the Human · height
  • ≈ 3.3–120 × Grain of sand · grain diameter (sand size class) lined up end to end match the Grain of rice · kernel length (long-grain class)

Counts divide one sourced figure by another. "End to end" uses each object's main measurement; weight and volume rows appear only when both figures are sourced.

How it compares

  • 3.3–120× A grain of rice is about 3.3–120 times as long as a grain of sand is wide. See side by side
  • 1.3–2.2× A grain of rice is about 1.3–2.2 times as long as a black garden ant. See side by side
  • 1/1.3–2.3 A honeybee is about 1.3–2.3 times as long as a grain of rice. See side by side
  • 1/2.7 A US penny is about 2.7 times as wide as a grain of rice is long. See side by side
  • 1/6.1 A golf ball is about 6.1 times as wide as a grain of rice is long. See side by side
  • 1/220–270 An average adult is about 220–270 times as tall as a grain of rice is long. See side by side

Factors compare the kernel length (long-grain class) of a grain of rice with each object’s own main measurement (height for a human). Where a size varies, the factor is given as a range.

Notes on these figures

  • The range is IRRI's long-grain class for brown rice (hulled, before milling); milled white rice was not measured by this source.
  • No USDA figure for kernel length was found, so the IRRI scale is used instead.
  • No primary source giving the mass of a single long-grain kernel was found, so mass is left out.
